An Evening Dialogue on
Technology, Jobs and Education

We collaborated with Singapore Management University (SMU) to present a dialogue session that discussed the importance of preparing future generations for the changes ahead.

Held at the Majestic Hotel KL, a keynote speech was delivered by Professor Arnoud De Meyer, followed by a panel discussion comprising Tengku Azian Shahriman, Wing K. Lee, Professor Leong Tze Yun and Lai Chang Wen.

Session Highlights:

  1. There are four drivers of change that will impact the workforce:
    • Automation, also known as cybernation, has slowly removed jobs requiring manual labour. In 15-20 years, it is estimated that two-thirds of current jobs will be fully replaced by automation.
    • Companies will shift from the traditional hierarchical organisation as the Internet has allowed workers to trade their skills freely on the open market.
    • As lifespans increase, the design of work and the workplace will have to adapt to maintain productivity. This is despite the decline in physical strength and mental flexibility.
    • The growing middle class's consumption patterns and preferences encourage innovation and open up new opportunities for young adults preparing to embrace the region.
  2. In preparing the younger generation for such a future, the education system must play a vital role in fostering the necessary skills and qualities to instil flexibility, creativity, innovation and social intelligence.
