SJKC Sin Min in Simpang, Taiping, has been enhanced with a Frog Classroom for its special needs pupils.

Funded by YTL Foundation, the specialised classroom will allow the pupils to learn more positively.

YTL Foundation programme director Datin Katleen Chew Wai Lin said the classroom used interactive modules such as videos, presentations and visually-attractive methods to make learning more accessible for pupils who tend to struggle with traditional methods of teaching.

“The interactive modules help the children understand their lessons more easily and retain knowledge more effectively.

“The classroom is also equipped with keyboards and other input methods for children who find handwriting difficult, touch screens for interactive learning, rocking chair to calm them, special games and other learning aids,” she said.

The classroom was launched by Tan Tiong Yih, who is senior private secretary to Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Nga Kor Ming on Aug 6.

It can support pupils with autism with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, cerebral palsy, delayed development and other learning disabilities.

The teaching and learning process is customised for pupils according to their ability, to optimise their potential through the specialised application of teaching and learning techniques.

This is the second school in the country to be equipped with the special classroom after SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi in Sepang.

School headmistress Tan Choy Ying believes the classroom would be fully utilised by current and future pupils.

Thanking YTL for supporting children with special needs, she said the school was an active user of the Frog Virtual Learning Environment for teaching and learning.

She added that the school started its special needs class in 2012 and was open to children aged seven to 14.

SJK(C) Sin Min which started operating a specialised class for students with special needs in 2012 has received a big boost from YTL Foundation.

On top of funding the renovation of a special needs classroom, the installation of new fittings and furnishings and the purchase of special needs equipment, the foundation launched its Smart Frog Classroom for special needs children yesterday.

The class, open to students aged seven to 14, supports the learning needs of students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, delayed development and other learning disabilities.

The teaching and learning process is customised for each student according to their ability, to optimise their potential through the specialised application of teaching and learning techniques.

The classroom is equipped with keyboards and other input methods for children who find handwriting difficult. There are also touchscreens for interactive learning, manipulative learning aids, visual learning aids, specially selected games, a large table to encourage group interaction, a rocking chair to calm students and more.

The school is the second in Malaysia to be equipped with a Frog Classroom for children with special needs, after SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi in Sepang.

“This Smart Frog Classroom is a space that encourages interaction and bonding, which is important for children, especially those with special needs,” said Tan Tiong Yih, senior private secretary to Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat Nga Kor Ming.

As experts gain more knowledge on the best ways to support the needs of these children, upgrades to classrooms, learning facilities and infrastructure are needed.

The new Smart Frog Classroom offers students space with organised, well-designed areas that will set the stage for a positive learning environment.

It uses interactive modules like videos, presentations and visually attractive methods to make learning more accessible to students who tend to struggle with traditional methods of teaching.

The interactive modules help these children understand their lessons more easily and retain knowledge more effectively.

“Education is key in uplifting children who face challenges in life, be it socioeconomic challenges or having special needs,” said Datin Kathleen Chew Wai Lin, Programme Director of YTL Foundation.

NIBONG TEBAL: Nothing seems to escape the QR code these days, including schools.

At SJK (T) Ladang Jawi, a QR code system that is linked to a database is used by teachers to assess the behaviour of their pupils.

Under the school’s information and communications technology (ICT) initiative, the 22 teachers bank on mobile devices to scan QR coded cards which are given to each of the 117 pupils.

The school’s ICT coordinator, B. Prabu, said the system, named ‘QRsikap’, would allow the teachers to track the behaviour of the pupils and encourage them to be good.

“Every month, the record is tabulated and the best pupils will be announced.

“We hope it will motivate them to behave well at all times,” said Prabu, who believed the system was the first to be implemented in schools in the country.

He was speaking at the launch of the programme by Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy at the school here yesterday.

Apart from the system, the school also introduced dozens of other initiatives to integrate science and technology such as interactive ICT kiosks, robotics and 3D printing workshops, web designing and computer animation classes, online-based examinations and a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) studio.

The teachers are also able to access the minutes of meetings, school reports and attendance records with their mobile devices via the Internet while the interest of the pupils is kept alive through the Frog VLE (Virtual Learning Environment), which is simple, fun and engaging.The Frog Classroom is fully funded by YTL Foundation as part of its programme to transform classrooms throughout Malaysia into 21st Century learning spaces that promote technology-enabled and student-focused learning.

Every Frog Classroom is a space for students to learn creatively and also serve as a Frog Hub, which is a space for teachers in the community to learn and share new classroom experiences.

Ramasamy said science and technology was the way to go.

“Children sometimes get fed up with the textbooks and no longer have interest in the traditional method, so science and technology is the way to go.

“With smartphones, students want to be connected and do things hands-on,” he said.

Ramasamy, who is also Penang Education Committee chairman, announced a RM5,000 allocation for the school to install CCTV cameras.

北海锺灵中学不再“老爷”(福建话)!随着青蛙虚拟学习课室正式启用,师生们踏上新科技学习,教学不再局限课本及由老师指导,学校一片清新科技风。

刘霖和:每年出现学习文化冲击

校长刘霖和透露,校方在每一年新生录取时,与入学的学生家长讨论回馈时发现,学校让他们感觉有些“老爷”,出现了学习文化的冲击。

“这些小学生及学生家长,在小学时已开始接触青蛙虚拟教学课室,当学生们升上中学时,面对白墙及四方的教学方式及环境,有感到不太能接受。”

“所以,校方在董事部及热心商家人士协助下,庆幸在短短2个星期内完成基本装修及配备,让青蛙虚拟学习课室得以落实。”

刘校长表示,有了青蛙虚拟学习课室,北海锺灵将推动更广泛的数理教育及21世纪学习,让学生们在更具活力环境下掌握数理科学习。

该校的青蛙虚拟课室获得董事会、洪凯威及黄文坡医生等赞助8万令吉,杨忠礼基金则赞助课室的桌椅、冷气及电脑设备1万5000令吉,教室可容纳约40名师生上课。

出席嘉宾包括洪凯威代表陈骏锋、黄文坡医生太太方宝心、教育局北海区教师活动中心资讯技术组官员诺哈菲莎、FROGASIA SDN BHD区域会计经理乌沙拉妮、董事会代表准拿督曾文忠、准拿督张凯名等,在校长刘霖和及副校长侯黛群的陪同下,共同为青蛙虚拟学习课室主持启用仪式。

UNIVERSITI Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is the first institution of higher learning in Malaysia to have a Frog Classroom.

Its deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Marzuki Mustafa launched the new classroom at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Frog Classroom was set up at the university in a collaboration between YTL Foundation, FrogAsia and a UKM team led by Prof Dr Radha M K Nambiar, professor of literacy and the chair of the Centre for Literacy and Sociocultural Transformation.

Prof Radha’s research interests and publications centre on understanding how learners learn and what can be done to enhance their learning by exploring the role of strategies, socialisation practices, learning styles, teachers and the digitisation of knowledge. She led a study on the impact of Frog Classrooms published in 2017 – A Study on the Impact of Redesigned Malaysian Classrooms on Teacher Pedagogy and Student Learning Behaviour and Outcomes for the 21st Century.

At UKM, the setting up of a Frog Classroom resulted from a long collaboration between Prof Radha and YTL Foundation, which began with a research grant in 2016 to study the effectiveness of Frog Classrooms in improving student engagement and learning efficacy and upgrading teaching through the integration of technology.

“The Frog Classroom in UKM is the only one of its kind developed by and with the assistance of students, who were told to create a space for learning that they would want to use.

“This new space differs from the traditional classroom in terms of physical arrangement.

“While traditional classrooms promote transmission of knowledge from the teacher to the student, this space serves to foster co-construction of knowledge, where the teacher and learners work interactively to solve problems and more.

“As a 21st Century learning and teaching space, harnessing technology is key to optimising this room,” Prof Radha explained.

The Frog Classroom Programme is an initiative by YTL Foundation in collaboration with FrogAsia, provider of the Frog Virtual Learning Environment.

The programme aims to transform classrooms in government schools throughout Malaysia into 21st Century learning spaces that promote technology-enabled, student-focused learning.

Frog Classrooms are equipped with 4G Internet, mobile devices that provide access to the Frog VLE, as well as the programme’s hallmark curved tables, designed to create more opportunities for peer-led learning and interaction.

YTL Foundation supports schools in the setting up of Frog Classrooms through project management and the provision of furniture and fittings to complete the classroom.

“We are truly excited to set up the Frog Classroom at UKM who has been our partner in validating the effectiveness of the classroom in schools.

“The installation of the classroom in UKM is an endorsement of a programme that we have invested heavily into in the past five years to improve education in this country. “We hope that having this education space in a university for the first time will facilitate research by both undergraduate and postgraduate students on new pedagogical techniques that can be applied in Malaysia, as well as its effects on learning styles, strategies and learners,” said YTL Foundation programme director Datin Kathleen Chew.

The 2016 study led by Prof Radha found that when using the Frog Classroom, teachers became more creative and innovative, using a greater variety of materials, activities and methods during lessons. The role of teachers had also evolved into facilitators, guiding students in the learning process rather than serving as the source of knowledge and information. Using the Frog Classrooms as Frog Hubs, teachers were able to hold discussions with their peers from other schools and share best practices to help each other improve their teaching skills.

For the students, the Frog Classrooms helped in honing their 21st Century learning skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, collaboration and cooperation, as well as soft skills like communication. The students were found to display better peer interaction and better ability to learn from each other in the Frog Classrooms, which were more learner-centred – with more individualised, self-directed and independent learning.

(北海3日訊)甲拋峇底培育學校校長鄺桂麗說,該校通過董事部、家教協會與YTL亞洲青蛙有限公司的聯合贊助,讓校內的課室增設配備,學生也在舒适環境下求學。

系統查學生課業

她昨早出席該校舉行青蛙虛擬教室開幕禮上時指出,傳統教學結合了現代的網路教學,老師可以通過這個配備在系統上檢查學生的課業,家長也能在該系統上,了解孩子的學習程度。

YTL亞洲青蛙有限公司(北馬區)會計經理烏莎拉妮說,青蛙教室亦可讓學生從游戲中活學活用,并且回答課程內的課業,而這些概念在2012年便已開始,适用于小學一年級至中學高中三。

她說,學生若在外學習需負擔費用,但在學校則是一個免費平台,讓所有學生都有機會接触和學習。

另外,該公司贊助了14張桌子、41張椅子及2架冷氣機給該校的青蛙虛擬教室。

KULIM - Majlis pelancaran Frog Classroom telah diadakan pada 7 April lalu.

Pengetuanya, Md Saad Man, berkata, Frog Classroom dilaksanakan bagi mentranformasi bilik darjah kepada sebuah kelas yang ceria bertepatan tahap kolaborasi dan penglibatan murid untuk pembelajaran abad ke-21.

"Tranformasi bilik darjah ini dapat meningkatkan peratus penggunaan VLE Frog dalam kalangan murid.

"Penggunaan peralatan ICT membantu murid untuk meneroka maklumat yang meluas dan menggalakkan penggunaan KBATdalam kalangan murid," katanya.

Majlis tersebut telah dirasmikan oleh Penolong PPD Kemanusiaan Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Kulim Bandar Baharu, Mazlan Osman.

Majlis itu turut dihadiri oleh wakil Frog Asia Sdn Bhd, Mazlyin Awang.

KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Foundation aims to expand its Frog Classroom Programme to 1,000 schools nationwide.

“So far, due to budget constraints we have only set up this programme in 180 schools and another 50 Tamil schools are still in progress,” said YTL Foundation programme director Datin Kathleen Chew at the Leaps of Knowledge Conference 2018 here today.

“The foundation spent RM15,000 to set up an optimised 21st century classroom at each school to create an amazing learning environment.

“The conference aims to inspire, equip and empower Malaysians to collaboratively and collectively raise the education bar.”

Some 1,000 educators, parents, students and other people from the education sector took part in the conference.

Chew said the programme organised by YTL Foundation, FrogAsia and the Education Ministry.

“It is evident that change has taken place and that technology has made a huge impact on education in the country,” she added.

FrogAsia Sdn Bhd executive director Lou Yeoh said the company believed in a world where everybody loved learning and where technology removed boundaries.

“With technology, there is equal access to quality education regardless of location or background.

“With this VLE platform, schools across the country can collaborate and support one another, students, parents and other members of the education community to raise the bar and make 21st Century learning more accessible and empowering,” she said.

SMK Jalan Reko teacher Mohamad Jalil Mohamad Yunus said VLE had made it easier for his students to understand their lessons.

“In 2016, I was ill for three months. However, with the VLE platform my students were able to continue with their classes when I was not in the classroom.

“All they had to do was access my notes online,” he said.

FrogAsia launched the FrogPlay World Championship, a competition that aims to encourage students around the world to collaborate and optimise the use of the FrogPlay game learning and revision application on VLE.

Since its launch last year, students have clocked more than 1.5 million revision hours on FrogPlay.

During the conference, the two workshops had teachers trying the latest VLE features in an immersion activity and hearing from their experienced peers on optimising benefits of the VLE.

SM St Peter Telipok, Kota Kinabalu principal Robert S. Vitalis said the FrogPlay VLE platform had helped students to improve their ICT skills.

SK STOWELL in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, has gone a step further with the full adoption of digital teaching and learning for pupils from Year One to Six.

With this digital implementation, all core subjects in the school will be taught on the Frog Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) platform in the classroom through Boost interactive lessons from FrogAsia.

Pupils can complete their homework and revise their studies on the FrogPlay gamified teaching and learning application.

The school has been equipped with 18 projectors for all classrooms, as well as a Frog Classroom - a shared 21st century teaching and learning space designed to elevate collaboration and creativity among students.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, who is also the Bukit Mertajam MP, said he was proud that SK Stowell was leading its peers with the full adoption of digital teaching and learning.

“Education is a means of preparing our children to be better equipped in facing the challenges of the future and I believe it is imperative to start empowering our children right from Year 1.

“It is time for our schools to go fully digital and I would like to congratulate the school for being the first government school in Malaysia to fully adopt digital teaching and learning with Frog Boost.

“I hope this new environment will spark creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication in the pupils here.

“Now every teacher can access readily available teaching and learning content and use it in classrooms to teach besides also assigning homework and revision on the digital platform.

“Teachers who become more inspired through this initiative can also create more content and share all of their materials with other teachers across the country.

“Let this be a role model for other schools in the Penang state and I hope this will inspire more schools to take up this initiative,” he said in his speech when launching the full digital teaching system at SK Stowell on the Penang mainland recently.

Also present were school headmaster Jamil Omar, YTL Foundation programme director Datin Kathleen Chew and FrogAsia executive director Lou Yeoh.

Speaking to reporters later, Sim said he had been approached by many schools in Bukit Mertajam for the fully digitalised system.

He said SK Stowell would be a pilot project, and other schools could send their teachers to SK Stowell to personally experience the system, and if suitable, they could seek to have it extended to their respective schools.

He said the programme would not have been possible without co-operation between the teachers and headmaster.

He said the BM parliamentary office and YTL Foundation, which developed the system, had jointly contributed RM60,000 to set up the system.

Jamil said the senior leadership team from the school attended workshops on the adoption and optimisation of Frog VLE in the school and in turn were now sharing their knowledge with other teachers.

“The teachers themselves find that Boost eases their burden in having to create material as Boost covers all topics and it is so easy to use.

“They are excited to use the Frog VLE and the projectors in the classroom to teach.

“We thank Sim and YTL Foundation for their generous contribution to the school, which is now ready to be fully digital in our classroom teaching,” he added.

Chew, in her speech, said YTL Foundation had been working to improve education in this country since 1997.

“We started by giving scholarships for tertiary education to students in need so they could break through the cycle of poverty and bring hope and transformation to their communities.

“Seven years ago, we started working with FrogAsia to help equip schools and adopt technology in teaching and learning.

“However, we found that most schools did not have classrooms that were conducive for 21st century learning.

“We worked with our architects and design team at YTL and transformed the first classroom at SMK Puchong Batu 14.

“And, after the success of our first Frog classroom, YTL opened the programme to all schools and to-date, we have completed 280 classrooms across all states in the country.

“Our ambition is to have 1,000 of these 21st century classrooms,” she said.

Chew said a study on the impact of Frog Classrooms on Teacher Pedagogy and Student Learning Behaviour and Outcomes was done by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia on the impact of the Frog Classrooms.

“The study found that teachers are more creative and innovative in their approach and there is a display of more 21st century learning skills in the classroom.

“The study also has been more of a shift in the role of the teacher to that of a facilitator.

“On the student’s side of the equation, UKM found the classroom to be more learner- centred and there is more self-directed and independent learning and also improved 21st century learning skills were observed.

“Better peer interaction and pupils learning from each other were also noted.

“Therefore, in partnership with Sim and FrogAsia, we are really excited to support SK Stowell in creating a 21st century education environment throughout all classrooms here,” she said.

Chew said through YTL’s contribution of the projectors to every classroom, it was hoped that all teachers and pupils in the school would be able to experience the 21st century education daily.

WITH support from YTL Foundation, SK Seri Nilam in Sentul is the latest school to launch its Frog Classroom.

SK Seri Nilam’s Frog Classroom is fully funded by YTL Foundation and part of its programme to transform classrooms throughout Malaysia into 21st Century learning spaces that promote technology-enabled, student-focused learning.

Every Frog Classroom is a space for students to learn creatively and also serves as a Frog Hub, a space for teachers in the community to learn and share new classroom experiences.

YTL Foundation programme director Datin Kathleen Chew Wai Lin launched the Frog Classroom.

“With the transformation of regular classrooms to Frog Classrooms, students are empowered to learn from each other more easily and improve interaction.

“Teachers too are able to benefit from these classrooms, as it encourages them to be more creative with their teaching approaches,” she said.

In SK Seri Nilam, the Frog Classroom will also have access to 4G Internet to ensure speedy access to the cloud-based Frog Virtual Learning Environment (Frog VLE) learning platform. It is also equipped with the programme’s hallmark curved tables, designed to create more opportunities for peer-led learning and interaction.

SK Seri Nilam headmaster Mohd Sukardi Abd Ghafar and five other teachers are taking part in the Global School Leaders Malaysia (GSL Malaysia) programme, a two-year continuous professional leadership development programme for school leaders. It is where the school head and senior assistants will attend monthly workshops followed by coaching sessions. Schools in this programme will be able to learn and employ new strategies for improving student learning and teaching practices.

To date, there are 280 classrooms that have been transformed into Frog Classrooms nationwide. Any school can apply to have a Frog Classroom, with selection based on a list of criteria.
