About Community Projects

"

A child’s environment, socio-economic background, family and community play active roles in development. That’s why we continually seek opportunities to reach communities we can impact.

Ruang Kita

Sentul Raya Sdn. Bhd. approached us to engage with a low-cost housing community in Sentul. We began by focusing on some of their most pressing challenges. Following discussions to discern their needs, Ruang KITA (Komuniti Ini Tanggungjawab Anda) was born, providing a safe haven in which children in their community can learn, play and socialise.

This effort was in collaboration with Sentul Raya Sdn. Bhd., the Ministry of Federal Territories, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM).

Our key objectives were to:

Reduce the socio-economic effect of urban poverty among its residents.
Create a more conducive environment for them to live, work and play.
Provide a safe space for families to come together.
We brought in Toy Libraries Malaysia (TLM), International Medical University (IMU) and Humankind to run programmes in the community.
TLM installed a toy library in a section of the refurbished space. An NGO established in 2017, it promotes play and champions the values of building safe, healthy, happy communities.

Ruang KITA was launched in early 2020 at Perumahan Awam Seri Perak, Bandar Baru Sentul and continues to impact over 7,000 residents in the community.

Together with TLM, IMU and Humankind,
we conducted various programmes:

Educational programmes with playtime for children
Nutritional and healthcare programmes for mothers
Psychological First Aid (PFA) training for residents

This programme will be a possible model for other low-cost flat communities to follow.

“It all comes down to whether community spirit and values can be fostered. We start with the lowest hanging fruit — mothers. And then move on to young adults. When others in the community see the value in what we’re doing, we hope they will go on to impart that same value to their neighbours. And when people can see the benefits, then they may finally take ownership.”
