Scholar Stories:
Parames Munian

"

Without education, I had no way forward. Growing up in Petaling Jaya Old Town with a single parent, I quickly learned that every opportunity had to be earned. The encouragement of my teachers showed me that learning could break cycles and change lives — not just mine, but my family’s too.

My path to pursuing Anthropology and Sociology at Universiti Malaya was shaped by a long-standing curiosity about people, cultures, and the stories that define societies. Since my early secondary school years, I found myself fascinated not just by historical events, but by the experiences of the people behind them — how communities evolve, how identities are formed, and how individuals contribute to society. Choosing this field of study allowed me to explore my interests in a meaningful way while preparing me to make a positive impact on the world.

The turning point in my journey came after facing repeated scholarship rejections. I had almost given up, convinced that trying again would only bring more disappointment. Then, a simple conversation with a neighbour encouraged me to take one final chance. That conversation led me to the YTL Foundation Scholarship, and applying felt like my last attempt — but it became the decision that changed everything.
Receiving the YTL Foundation Scholarship gave me more than financial relief. It meant I could focus fully on my studies without worrying about tuition or living expenses, respecting my mother’s advice to avoid loans. But beyond the practical support, the scholarship opened doors for me to experiences that would shape my personal and professional growth. Internships, bootcamps, and volunteer activities allowed me to step outside the classroom, develop skills like leadership and communication, and build confidence in my abilities.

One of the experiences that meant the most to me was teaching underprivileged students. Seeing them gain knowledge and confidence reminded me of the mentors who believed in me when I needed it most. Teaching taught me patience, empathy, and the power of guidance — lessons I hope to pass on one day.

Beyond academics, participating in university events and competitions pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, allowing me to discover strengths I didn’t know I had.
Through it all, my greatest motivation remains making a difference and honouring my family’s sacrifices. The thought of inspiring and supporting others, just as my mentors inspired me, drives me to continue growing, learning, and giving back.

For students who are standing at the crossroads, unsure whether to try once more, my advice is simple: take the step. Believe in yourself, embrace every opportunity, and let the foundation support your journey. It’s not just financial assistance — it’s the chance to grow, to explore, and to make a meaningful impact.
