The Initiative comprises 2 courses:
YTL Foundation and the University of Birmingham acknowledge that many teachers in high-needs formal and informal schools bring valuable experience but lack formal qualifications, and have limited access to obtaining quality teacher education from a recognised institution.
Therefore, this Initiative aims to work in partnership with alternative learning centres and Teach for Malaysia to ensure their teachers receive world-class quality pedagogical skills to teach children from the most underserved, underprivileged, and marginalised communities, in Malaysia.
We also strive to create a self-sustaining teacher education framework wherein graduates of this Initiative have the skills to:
If you successfully complete the PGCEi (Malaysia), you will gain a postgraduate-level teacher education certificate from the University of Birmingham that is part of the prestigious UK Russell Group.
If you successfully complete the MA Education (Inclusion, Equity and Transformation), you will gain a postgraduate degree from the University of Birmingham that is part of the prestigious UK Russell Group.
You will also become a skilled and qualified educator who has the potential to address the root causes of educational inequity in Malaysia. You will be part of a professional learning community who strives to improve the teacher education system in Malaysia.
Academic Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University or degree-awarding body, or a qualification at equivalent level (usually achieved with the equivalent of a grade point average minimum of 3.0 or a second class upper)
English Language Requirement:
You are required to demonstrate competency in spoken and written English, as demonstrated by the successful completion of the Admission Assessment (in May or June)

A prior completion of a recognised and valid English language test*; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.0 with no less than 6.0 in any band. The IELTS with no less than 6.0 in any band is equivalent to:
*Do Note: Your IELTS, TOEFL, and/or PTE certificate must be within the valid period of two (2) years.
Teaching Requirement:
At least six months (full-time equivalent) experience in a paid or volunteer role as a teacher or teaching assistant in an educational setting
Reference Letter:
A reference letter from your current employer or school headteacher
English Language Requirement:
You are required to demonstrate competency in spoken and written English, as demonstrated by the successful completion of the Admission Assessment (in May or June)
Teaching Requirement:
At least two (2) years (full-time equivalent) experience in a paid or volunteer role as a teacher or teaching assistant in an educational setting
Reference Letter:
Only graduates of the PGCEi (Malaysia) delivered under the Teachers for Educational Equity Initiative are allowed to apply for the MA Education.
Interested candidates must also be actively involved in the Malaysian education sector throughout the duration of the MA programme.
