The Heart of Interning:
A Journey Beyond the Desk

"

This experience taught us plenty about being a working adult but with the support of my colleagues and supervisors, we adapted quickly.

"

A unique feature of the YTL Foundation scholarship is our internship programme which offers our scholars an opportunity to gain hands-on industry experience within the YTL Group.

We sat down with four scholars who recently completed their internships with YTL Foundation, YTL Communications, YTL Power and Data Centre, and YTL Construction, respectively: Rainer Ng (Strategic Communications student at MMU Cyberjaya), Sharon Varghese (Law student at MMU Melaka), Muhammad Lukhman (Finance student at UiTM Puncak Alam), and Goh Huei Qi (Architecture student at UM) to hear about their experiences thus far – from first-day jitters to their ‘AH HA!’ moments.

Togetherness:
The value of collaboration

Internships with the YTL Group are more than clocking in the hours and completing tasks. They are about personal and professional growth, and practising togetherness – a core value embodied across the YTL companies.

“For me, togetherness really stood out during this internship! You would be surprised how much the YTL values can bring people together and lead to a healthy workforce which can positively impact the work outcome,” Rainer Ng. “It is as simple as me adapting to a full workday. Not only are my colleagues (at YTL Foundation) full of energy, but they’ve also created a space for me to be myself and the energy to get through my first few days as a working adult.” ~ Rainer Ng

Togetherness isn’t just about being in the same room. It is about recognising the value of collaboration and allowing people to have and share different perspectives which creates a lively environment for all including a first-time intern to thrive.

“My colleagues (at YTL Construction) are always willing to share insights and guide me through projects, making the learning process much smoother. It’s inspiring to see how teamwork and communication play a crucial role in the industry,” ~ Huei Qi

Hard Work: The Key to Personal
and Professional Growth

Hard work is the backbone of any successful internship and at our Foundation, we challenge our scholars to think critically, adapt quickly, and continuously improve themselves during their internships. However, hard work and stretching the limits of one’s knowledge and skills is nothing without the right mentorship.

“I’ve had quite a few clumsy moments. I was editing a Tik Tok video for the Foundation and before I finished editing, I accidentally posted the video. I quickly removed the video before anyone saw it and informed my supervisor. My supervisor quickly reminded me that it is okay to make mistakes if we learn from it,” ~ Rainer Ng

“Hardwork and togetherness stood out the most to me, during my internship. Architecture and construction are collaborative fields, and I’ve seen firsthand how teamwork drives a project forward. Whether it’s coordinating with engineers or learning from experienced colleagues, working together makes a significant difference. Hard work is another key value, especially when managing multiple tasks and ensuring accuracy in the details,” ~ Huei Qi

Moral Responsibility:
More Than Just a Job

Beyond the development of their technical skills and knowledge, YTL Foundation places a strong emphasis on moral responsibility to encourage our scholars to embrace their role as responsible citizens of society and to always do the right thing.

“As an accounting student, we tend to dislike theory, but my internship supervisor emphasised the importance of abiding by the Malaysian Financial Reporting Standard which taught me the value of integrity and moral responsibility in reporting,” ~ Muhammad Lukhman

Words of Wisdom from
Our Interns

“Keep a diary for your internship – it will come in handy when updating your CV,”
“You’ll also be amazed by the tasks you’ve done and the things you’ve learned.” ~ Sharon Varghese

Lastly, “bring a jacket because Menara YTL is a freezer,” exclaimed all.

Collectively, our four scholars advised that an internship is the best time to be inquisitive, be courageous in trying new tasks and learning new skills, be bold to voice your opinions, be humble to learn from your mistakes, and be open to different viewpoints.

Empowering Educators Through Innovative Learning Experiences

In January, Arus Academy opened its doors to 33 PGCEi teachers for a transformative two-day seminar. The focus was on 'Curriculum & Planning,' 'Microteaching,' and 'Growth Mindset,' provided a unique opportunity for educators to step away from their daily activities and immerse themselves in a space of learning and growth. As they exchanged ideas and deepened their understanding, it was clear that this was more than just another seminar—it was a chance to truly reshape their teaching practices and approach to the classroom.

At the same time, 15 MA Education educators gathered at Menara YTL for a one-day seminar on 'Leadership and Management in Education in a Global Context.' With global challenges ever evolving, this session offered invaluable perspectives on how education leadership can respond with confidence and clarity, ensuring these educators are equipped to lead with vision in an increasingly interconnected world.

To further inspire creativity and problem-solving, the University of Birmingham lecturers introduced PlayMobil—an innovative modelling kit designed to stimulate fresh thinking. Through this hands-on activity, educators explored themes of inclusive education in a way that was both engaging and thought-provoking. It was a moment of collaboration, inspiration, and personal growth, allowing these educators to sharpen their skills and, ultimately, strengthen their ability to make a meaningful impact on the lives of their students.

YTL Sustainability – The Importance of Ocean and Marine Conservation

54C held its very first sustainability session focused on the importance of ocean and marine conservation on January 23, in collaboration with YTL Sustainability. The session welcomed 30 students, aged 13 to 20, from two refugee schools – Kachin Learning Centre and Myanmar Karen Organisation Learning Centre.

Guided by interns Mei Xin and Stephen, the students dove into an engaging exploration of the ocean’s wonders—discovering fascinating facts, the ocean’s crucial role in climate regulation, biodiversity, and how human actions impact marine ecosystems.

Through interactive games, lively discussions, and hands-on learning, students gained a deeper understanding of marine conservation and, most importantly, their role in protecting our oceans. The session aimed not only to raise awareness but also to empower students to become future ocean stewards in their own communities.

Celebrating the 2024 Southeast Asia Acumen Fellows

What a vibrant start to the year it was in January, as we gathered to celebrate the incredible journey of 18 exceptional individuals – the 2024 SEA Acumen Fellows cohort!

The evening was made even richer by the presence of Acumen partners and Foundry Fellows from the past four years, all coming together to joyfully welcome the new cohort into the ever-expanding Foundry family. We kicked off the festivities with a spirited Lou Sang ('Prosperity Toss') - a vibrant tradition symbolising our collective hopes for abundance, upliftment, and a bright year ahead. The SEA Fellows then moved us deeply with a powerful and resonant performance (lyrics included here), beautifully embodying their shared vision and unwavering resilience.

In her moving concluding address, SEA Expansion Lead Joelle Pang eloquently shared:

"Social change is not linear—it is a constellation, a web of interconnected lights that illuminate new possibilities. Each of us is a star in this vast sky—shining with our own lived experiences, ideas, and dreams. But a single star, no matter how bright, cannot light up the night alone.

It is when we come together—forming constellations—that we create patterns of change, roadmaps for what could be. Some of us are navigators, guiding those just starting out. Some are fixed points, steady in our commitment. Others are emerging lights, growing stronger with every challenge. But no matter where we stand, we are bound by a shared belief: that the world can be different, that justice can be built, that dignity can be restored."

The entire evening served as a radiant and heartwarming reminder of the profound power of community – filled with shared laughter, thoughtful reflection, and the collective energy of social builders all deeply committed to forging a better, more equitable Southeast Asia.
