As someone with a wide range of interests and hobbies, I was fascinated by the vast prospects of the YTL Group, being a conglomerate that is active in multiple industries such as power generation, construction, real estate, cement manufacturing and telecommunication. When I applied for the YTL Foundation Scholarship Programme, I was imagining a career path where it was possible to explore different industries within YTL.
Recalling the memories of applying for the YTL Foundation Scholarship Programme, I remember feeling so nervous yet incredibly hopeful at the same time. For me, receiving the scholarship enabled me to be financially independent to cover my own living expenses and tuition fees, and it was a great relief to not impose the burden on my family.
Being a YTL Foundation Scholar, I often reflect on the questions I frequently get asked: “Why choose the YTL Foundation Scholarship Programme?” and “What do you get from it?”
As someone with a wide range of interests and hobbies, I was fascinated by the vast prospects of the YTL Group, being a conglomerate that is active in multiple industries such as power generation, construction, real estate, telecommunication, cement manufacturing and other businesses. When I applied for the YTL Foundation Scholarship Programme, I was imagining a career path where it was possible to explore different industries within YTL. This might sound impractical, but it was the main reason I signed up for and accepted the scholarship.
Through the scholarship, I got to fulfil my dream of exploring new fields of work during my internships. During my semester breaks, I was given the opportunity to undergo internships in YTL Communications, where we helped the government to lay the 5G network around the Selangor area; as well as YTL Construction’s Facilities Management department, where we took care and maintained the hotels and resorts under YTL Group.
During the first internship, I had the opportunity to study the process of building a 5G communication tower, and how it was executed under the help of multiple subcontractors. For the unfamiliar, there is a location-scouting phase where we physically visit suitable locations for antenna installation. During the visit, we use drones and ranging wheels to do inspections. The scouting and location planning process is very important when dealing with 5G signals, as we must ensure there are no obstacles within the transmission path. On top of that, the places we visit could range from local schools to a rural hilltop, making this mission truly exciting.
My second internship was an entirely different experience. I got to see how the facilities of a hotel function. To keep it short, we have the fundamental piping, firefighting, and air conditioning systems. From the perspective of facilities management, we have to be familiar with all the systems, including their specifications, regulations, design, and how to maintain it. This internship pretty much taught me the importance of being detail-oriented, besides learning how to plan for an indoor refurbishment from top to bottom.
Having completed my internships with YTL Construction and YTL Communications respectively, these experiences have literally brought me places – from rural hilltops for 5G location scouting, to the hidden facilities and back-end systems that keep YTL hotels operational. These internships gave me industry exposure that I couldn’t obtain from typical coursework and has added intangible value to my field of study in Mechanical Engineering.
I do believe that everyone is able to find their ideal position in YTL, because the company is constantly expanding. Besides the industries mentioned above, the YTL Group is also at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing and digital banking, which will open a lot of opportunities to Malaysians from various backgrounds. Who knows, you could be one of the budding talents we are looking for!
