From Possibilities to Practices:
A TfEE Conference

"

Looking back, the conference itself became an example of what it was trying to create: a space where people working with underserved communities could speak, listen, and be listened to in return.

"

Three years of visiting learning spaces, walking alongside practitioners, and building relationships with Malaysia’s underserved communities raised a question we couldn’t ignore: how do we share what we have seen and learned in a way that reflects our ethos of co-creation with the communities?

The answer was to do something different. Rather than a traditional academic conference driven by one-way presentations and Q&A sessions, we invited our PGCEi (Malaysia) alumni and current students to take the lead. They designed and facilitated sessions built around real conversations, group thinking, and shared experiences. The reasoning was straightforward: if this programme is about standing alongside the communities, shouldn’t the way we come together as professionals reflect that exact same commitment?

What began as a blue-sky conversation evolved into something genuinely collaborative shaped with and by the very communities it sought to serve.

The day opened with a keynote from Azlina Kamal, UNICEF Education Specialist & Lead. She spoke candidly about the realities facing educators in alternative learning centres and underserved spaces, while reaffirming the profound significance of their work.
  • Khaled, PGCEi (Malaysia) Cohort 3 facilitated a workshop on Digital Education
  • Suaad, PGCEi (Malaysia) Cohort 1 shared her experience of raising critical digital literate learners
  • Franklin, PGCEi (Malaysia) Cohort 1 facilitated a workshop on leadership
  • Aina, MA Education Cohort, shared a summary of her dissertation
Across the four focus areas, the dialogue that unfolded was both deeply reflective and forward-looking:

Digital Education
Delegates grappled with critical questions of access and inclusion - how to build critical digital literacy among learners facing significant barriers, ensure online safety, and leverage technology to bridge gaps rather than widen them.

Pedagogies & Practices
Conversations flowed around building rapport with parents, navigating cultural expectations and weaving social-emotional learning into everyday teaching.

Leadership
There was a refreshing sense of clarity in the room. Delegates did not just identify systemic barriers but articulated solutions and discussed how to advocate for lasting change: How do we tell impactful stories of alternative learning centres more powerfully? How do we build clearer pathways for recognition and long-term sustainability?

Relationships, Wellbeing & Community Engagement
A powerful reminder that the challenges in high-needs learning spaces are not merely educational, but they are legal, logistical, financial, and deeply human. While delegates named these obstacles honestly, the overriding spirit in the room remained one of profound solidarity and hope.
Looking back, the conference itself became an example of what it sought to achieve: a space where everyone’s knowledge counted, where authentic conversation mattered more than performance, and where people working alongside underserved communities could talk, listen, and be listened to in return.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our host partner; Taylor’s University – School of Education. Nor without the collaborative efforts of our Teachers for Educational Equity team and network.

SEA ACUMEN FELLOWSHIP

Acumen Academy recently welcomed its 2026 Southeast Asia cohort for their first in-person gathering at the Fellowship Programme Orientation.

The cohort broughttogether 20 leaders from across Southeast Asia who are tackling poverty through diverse approaches—including community-led development, climate resilience, disability inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods. While their work spans different communities, sectors, and contexts, they share a common commitment to creating lasting, meaningful change.

The immersive provided a space for Fellows to connect in person and deepen their relationships. Through shared stories, reflection, and open dialogue, participants explored their aspirations for the Fellowship and the impact they hope to make across the region.

Most importantly, the gathering laid the foundation of trust, camaraderie, and shared purpose that will support and anchor them throughout their journey together.

Welcoming our 2026 Scholar Cohort

We welcomed 31 new scholars into our 2026 Scholar cohort, with a celebratory Scholar Induction Ceremony, on August 7. Beyond the official signing ceremony and certificate presentations, the real magic happened in the quiet moments: watching the new scholars break the ice, share their aspirations, and instantly clicking with one another. From Dato’ Kathleen’s heart-felt speech which set the tone for the ceremony to Dato’ Soo Min’s closing message that reminded us of why the scholarship programme exists; it was a lovely evening spent with the new scholars, current scholars, and scholar alumni.

To our 2026 scholars, welcome to the YTL Foundation Family!
